The greatest invention of the 20th century was the television. Twenty-four hour sports news, “The Sopranos” and The History Channel, what more could a man ask?

There it stood in its midnight blue splendor, a beacon in a parking lot full of Dodge Caravans, Ford Explorers and Toyota Highlanders.

Another Year, Another Season

One of my favorite lines from any baseball movie is from Bull Durham. The coach explains to the players that baseball is a simple game. "You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball." It doesn't look too easy from my perspective in the stands but it does provide a very simple pleasure: watching the kids play baseball on a summer night.

I’m sitting in a cramped airline seat on the way to Miami via Houston to celebrate my friend Josh’s upcoming wedding. Cruising at 26,000 feet, I realized something: A couple days after arriving in Lawrence less than a week ago, it felt like I’d never left at all.
Leaving Lawrence

Summer is slowly coming to an end. The local baseball and softball leagues are finished for the season, players and their families are squeezing in one last vacation before school starts, and I am hitting the road to go back to California in a few days.

Softball goes hand in hand with Lawrence community

Speaking of community, there is a lot of Fastpitch being played in this area. Lee Ice runs the Parks and Rec. league and Bonnie Mills has a wonderful developmental league. Add LHS, Free State, Baldwin, Perry / Lacompton, and Eudora High Schools, the nine Lawrence Phenix Fastpitch teams and other traveling teams like the Hummers and Vipers, and you will find that the entire range of skill, talent, and desire are available to the young ladies of our community. Or is it?
